Notice:  For far too long, no company was offering an online training course to meet the online needs of the California security guards and their AB2880 training requirements.  This company is one of the first to address this need, and because of their background in both the security industry and extensive experience with Internet web design, development, operation and web marketing, it is well-positioned for success in this venture.

REQUIREMENTS TO GET A CALIFORNIA GUARD CARD

1.    Complete 8-hour credit Guard Card Course (this online course) which is comprised of Power To Arrest (4 hours) and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) / Terrorism Awareness (4 hours).  There is a test you have to complete and pass at the conclusion of the course.

2.  You need to go to a Livescan facility for digital fingerprinting and a background check by the FBI and DOJ.  There are many hundreds of Livescan facilities throughout California.  But it has to be in the state of California.  On the left margin of this page at the top, there is a listing of Livescan facilities you can go to.  Each has a different rolling fee.  There is a consistent $51 that has to be included for the FBI and DOJ fees.  If you have a clean criminal history, you will be able to proceed.  If you have a mark in your criminal history, this will be evaluated.  For example, a felony will reject your application.  A misdemeanor can also, depending on the type and age of the misdemeanor, as well as how many.  A person with a misdemeanor can possibly obtain it, but it can also be denied on that basis.  A person who gets his application rejected can appeal.  It is rare, but it has been possible for someone with a non-violent felony to obtain a guard card, but again, this is rare.

3.  Mail your guard card application to B.S.I.S. in West Sacramento or register online.  A $50 application fee must be included.  (If you register online, B.S.I.S. adds a $1 online convenience fee for processing.)

4.  Your California Guard Card will be mailed to you from B.S.I.S. in West Sacramento.  Also, you can check online for the issuance of your guard card.  If the record shows your permit has been issued, you can print that record and use this in the interim before you receive the hardcopy through the mail.    For your convenience, click here to check for the existence (or not) of your guard card.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS TO GET A CALIFORNIA GUARD CARD

Very simply, there are none.  You don't need a high school diploma, don't need to pass the G.E.D.

FUTURE EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS BEYOND THE 8-HOUR GUARD CARD COURSE

Assembly Bill AB 2880 which came into law in California in the year 2004, requires new guard to obtain a total of 40 hours of training in their first year.  So, the one-day, 8-hour Guard Card course fulfills part of that total 40 hours needed.  But an additional 32 hours is mandated, as follows:

  • Additional 16 hours after 30 days from guard card permit issuance or starting security job
  • Additional 16 hours after 6 months from guard card permit issuance or starting security job
  • Annual 8-hour refresher course each year

FIREARMS PERMIT TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

You need a 14-hour training course for the firearms permit.  This is not available yet online (and with regard to shooting, may not ever be available online).  So you will need to find a physical, non-online course for the firearms permit.  It may be that in the future, a course is available that teaches the non-range part of the requirements and the course concludes with livefire at a range.

FUTURE FIREARMS PERMIT REQUIREMENTS

Firearms permit holders need to requalify two times per year, 4 to 6 months apart from each other.  Since the firearms permit is for 2-years before it needs to be renewed, you need to requalify 4 times before renewing.  Nobody will send you a reminder to requalify so this is something that you need to keep track of.

Requalifying means you have to shoot the standard B.S.I.S. standard course of fire from varying distances between 3 yards to 15 yards.  You will shoot 50 rounds at an NRA B-27 human silhouette target and have to hit 40 out of 50.  So that is a very generous 10 misses that you are allowed.   This shooting needs to be administered, supervised and approved by a B.S.I.S. licensed firearms instructor.

Here's a reminder to practice your left-handed, unsupported shooting.  You will shoot 6 rounds this way.

Also remember that the instructor will have a stopwatch for an added stress on you.  You will be timed.  But in reality, an experienced shooter is able to pass this course of fire quite easily.

OC PEPPER SPRAY PERMIT TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

There are variable length OC Pepper Spray training courses that exist but all you need to be able to carry OC Pepper Spray on the job is a 2-hour course.  Just as long as it meets the California DOJ content with regard to legality, and it is conducted by a legitimate instructor, a carry permit can be issued.     Unlike the firearms permit and the guard card, this carry permit can be issued on the same day of completion of the course.

BATON PERMIT TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

This is a full, one-day course that needs to be taught by a B.S.I.S. baton licensed instructor.  As with the OC pepper spray carry permit, the baton permit can be issued on the same day as the course.

Observe that a California guard card can be used in any locality in the state of California.  All localities in California are covered, and if your city is not specified below but is inside the state boundary of California, it is under the jurisdiction of the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services and the guard card can be used.  You can train anywhere for your California guard card and use it anywhere in California.  It does not even matter if you take this course out-of-state.  This is a means for someone planning to move and work in California later as a guard to get a head start on obtaining training before stepping a foot in California.
